The LMS offers 2 presentation options for categories, courses etc. These can be adjusted in the item's settings under Item Presentation. 

Tiles

Tiles was introduced in ILIAS 5.4. This view allow content objects as thumbnail-style tiles. Images for these tiles can be uploaded in the settings of each individual object. There is a bar on the top of the card with a learning progress icon, the object icon, and an action menu. The tile image shows as a square with the title and course description etc below that. If tile image is not set, the box will simply be given a random colour background by the LMS. By default there will be 4 tiles in a row, this will be customizable in future LMS updates but it can also be adjusted in your theme styling if you have expertise in the area. 

Go to the tab “settings” and select the “item presentation” type “tiles” for your courses, groups, categories and folders. The LMS will then display tiles of all the items on the first hierarchical level of these respective areas, you can still reorder the tiles as desired. 

The tile view in a course cannot be combined with the option Sessions View->Limit number of sessions displayed (default setting for courses). Deactivate this option or switch to Simple View.
